Is the 3080 Still Good for 4K Gaming?

Hey everyone! I recently received a 240Hz 4K OLED monitor, and I'm currently using an RTX 3080 (with 10GB of VRAM) paired with an Intel i7-12700K. My games look absolutely stunning, but I've noticed some FPS drops, especially in titles like Cyberpunk and Clair Obscur. Do you think I should upgrade to an RTX 5080? If so, do I also need to upgrade my CPU?

The RTX 5080 is about 70% faster than the 3080, so ask yourself if those extra frames are worth the cost. For 4K gaming, a CPU upgrade might not be necessary since the GPU usually takes the hit in performance at that resolution. Stick with your current CPU for now!

I wouldn't underestimate the CPU upgrade, especially since many games are designed now with DLSS/FSR in mind. A more powerful CPU can significantly impact performance when you're upscaling your resolution.

Using a 3080, I find it decent for 4K, but I can't hit that sweet 240Hz mark. Gaming feels better with DLSS, but you’ll definitely need a good upgrade if you want high refresh rates. Your CPU is fine for now, but if you want to maximize performance, consider the 9800x3D down the line.

If you’d rather not go for the pricey 5080, consider something like the 5070 Ti or even the 9070 XT. They offer 80-90% of the performance at a better price. Sometimes, playing at 1440p can improve your experience too!

I recently upgraded from a 3080 to a 5080, and honestly, 4K gaming on the 3080 wasn't smooth for me. If you're looking for a solid performance boost at 4K, the 5080 is definitely the way to go!

I feel you! My 3080 struggled too. Definitely a noticeable difference with the 5080 when it comes to handling demanding games at 4K.

Honestly, if you really want to enjoy 4K gaming without constant struggles, you'll want to upgrade to something like the 5080. Your CPU would be okay for 4K, but if you're going to be diving into competitive gaming, a CPU upgrade might be worth considering later on.
