Is the Industry Addressing Pod Resizing and Node Count Challenges?

Hey everyone! I'm diving into cloud cost optimization and I've noticed a ton of solutions out there that promise to enhance resource allocation in Kubernetes. In theory, this would eliminate waste completely, but it seems that's not the reality. I'm curious about your experiences - what tools have you tried, and how did they work for you? Is the difficulty more about actual implementation or detecting the issues? I'm thinking of focusing on a specific problem: aligning pod CPU and memory for better node utilization. Is this actually a significant problem worth tackling?

The biggest hurdle isn't just about finding opportunities to optimize or choosing the right tool. It’s really about the different priorities of various teams: FinOps wants to cut costs, while SREs focus on system stability and often hesitate to approve resource reductions. Solutions need to factor in the needs of everyone involved in development, and finding a balance between cost efficiency and reliability is key. That’s precisely what we’re trying to achieve with our approach.

Honestly, I think trying to optimize compute costs might be a futile effort. Usually, the optimization process can end up costing more than any savings you might achieve because of the man-hours involved. Plus, it doesn't really account for other expenses like storage and data transfer. We’ve opted for bare metal clusters since they work better for our predictable workloads, and it’s way more cost-effective. We have quite a setup now at $3k/month, which was about what we spent for just five 8-CPU machines on the cloud.

I’m using CAST AI, and it’s pretty effective, especially when it comes to automating Spot instance usage. However, things like bin packing and rebalancing really rely on having the right setup from your K8s teams, such as proper node selectors and affinities. Scaling consistently can be tricky if you want all your pod replicas spread out over different nodes since that complicates any cost automation process.

I heard CAST AI requires elevated permissions to do its job. Did that raise any security concerns for you?
