Hey everyone! I'm currently using a 9800x3d in my PC to transcode my Blu-ray and DVD collection for Plex, and I have a NAS server with a Ryzen 1700x. I've found a good deal on a Ryzen 5950x and I'm considering putting it in the NAS. However, I'm curious if the extra 8 cores on the 5950x will make up for its lower single-core performance compared to the 9800x3d when it comes to encoding speed. I couldn't find definitive info in benchmark tests, and I'm hoping someone here can clarify if the 5950x would indeed be faster for video encoding tasks. Appreciate any insights!

The 9800x3d really shines with its single-core performance, but the 5950x can still hold its own compared to it. Even though the 5950x has more cores, the performance gap isn't as massive as you'd think. I found in benchmarks that it can outperform the 9800x3d, especially in productivity tasks, but it might not be a night-and-day difference. If you can pick it up at a good price, it could still be a solid upgrade for your NAS.

That's good to know! If it can at least match the 9800x3d, that’s enough for me to shift the encoding workload to it and keep my main PC free. I think I’ll go for the 5950x!
