Is the Samsung 870 EVO 2TB SSD Worth the Price?

Hey everyone! I'm considering buying a new 2TB SSD for my computer and I have my eye on the Samsung 870 EVO 2.5" model. I'm planning to install a new Linux OS since I've been on Windows 7 for quite a while and feel it's time for an upgrade. My computer is a pre-built model from around ten years ago, so I can only use the SATA 2.5" form factor.

I've seen that the 2.5" SSDs are starting to be phased out and the Crucial MX500 is no longer being made. The Samsung 870 EVO seems to be the only reputable option left, though I've read about some defective early batches (which I hope are now a thing of the past) and it's also pretty pricey.

I'm currently in Ireland, and the best price I found for the 870 EVO 2TB is just under €180 from Amazon Germany, with a 10% discount included. Since I don't keep up with hardware trends, I'm unsure if €180 is a good deal or if I'm getting ripped off. Given my situation, would you recommend buying this SSD at that price? I'd appreciate any advice you can give!

From what I gather, the Samsung 870 EVO is really one of the few solid options left for a 2.5" SSD that can handle being an OS drive. I actually picked up a 1TB version for my older machine, and it’s performing quite well with Fedora on it. If you're sticking with Linux, just keep in mind that you might want to avoid NVMe cards for now since they can have issues with Linux due to their multiple drive support sometimes not playing nice. But honestly, if you're looking for a reliable option for your setup, the 870 EVO is your best bet!

Thanks for that insight! I think sticking to a 2.5" SSD is best for my first upgrade. What do you think about the €180 price tag? Is that fair for this model?
