I've got a Samsung laptop that got infected after I tried to download an mp3. I called the number shown in a Microsoft Defender alert to get help with removing the malware. They told me to stay on the line as they scan my computer and said it would take days to resolve. When I asked how I could tell this wasn't a scam, they emailed me a case number from [email protected]. Is this legitimate support or just another scam?

This is a scam for sure. Legitimate Microsoft support does not give out numbers like that or require you to contact them for issues like this. Try to run a security scan with a trusted antivirus, and think about reinstalling Windows if you let them in.
Yeah, it’s definitely a scam. Microsoft would never use a Gmail address to communicate. If they're asking for remote access, that's a big red flag. You should end the call immediately and not provide any personal information.
Exactly! Just hang up and consider resetting your system if you gave them any access.
Don’t trust it! Any email from a Gmail domain claiming to be Microsoft is just nonsense. They have their own systems in place for communication, and this is not one of them.
It's quite clear this is a scam. Legit Microsoft support won't ever ask you to talk to them on a random call, and sending a Gmail for support is insane!
Just to echo everyone else, you need to be cautious. That email alone is enough to tell you this is not real support. Disconnect from them and check your device for malware using a reputable security tool instead.
100% agree. Better safe than sorry, and you might need a fresh install to be safe.
