Is Timeshift Enough for Backing Up My System?

I'm using Kubuntu 25.10 and I set up Timeshift to create system snapshots weekly. I also run it manually before I make big changes. Since I'm new to Linux and feeling kind of overwhelmed, I'm curious to know if Timeshift alone is a sufficient backup solution. I'm unsure about what exactly it backs up—is it just the settings, or does it include apps and personal documents too? If my system crashes and I need to reinstall Kubuntu, what does Timeshift actually restore? I suspect it isn't a full system (bare-metal) backup. I've also installed Back in Time; am I essentially duplicating functionalities with Timeshift? Thanks for helping me out with my questions!

Timeshift mainly restores your settings and system state, not personal files or app data. If you have important docs or photos, you might want a different solution for those. It's not meant to be a complete backup.

Got it, thanks! So, does Back in Time cover the gaps Timeshift leaves?

Timeshift generally restores the operating system but not personal files, apps, or the EFI partition. If you want more complete backups, consider using Clonezilla.

So it really just handles the OS? I need something to cover my apps and files too.

Finding comprehensive backup solutions on Linux can be tricky. I've been using Timeshift too, but I also look for options that offer full system backups like Mac's Time Machine.

Timeshift doesn't back up the EFI system partition, which can be a pain if you ever need to roll back a kernel. I had to manage that part manually after a Timeshift restoration.

Always keep a separate backup of your data on an external drive, preferably stored in a different location. You never know when something disastrous might happen, like a fire or theft! I back up my system in several places just to be safe.
