Hey everyone! I'm considering upgrading my CPU from a 12400F to a 14600KF and I want to see if it's a good idea. I mainly play competitive FPS games and don't care much about graphics quality—just looking for better performance. I have a 1440p 240Hz monitor and my current specs include a 12400F CPU, a 3070 Ti FE GPU, and 32GB of DDR4 3200 MHz RAM. I average about 160 FPS, but I think I might be hitting a CPU bottleneck since changing to lower graphics settings or even dropping to 1080p hasn't helped with FPS at all. The upgrade costs around £230, and I'm worried about not being able to afford a new motherboard or DDR5 RAM later on. Will I see significant gains from the upgrade? Thanks in advance!

Before you upgrade, ask yourself if you're really experiencing performance issues. If you're managing fine, consider saving for a bigger upgrade in the long run. If you go ahead with it, look for CPU bundles that include a motherboard and RAM; sometimes those deals can save you a lot. But in any case, moving from 12th to 14th will give you a boost in performance.
I made a similar upgrade mainly for productivity and noticed a significant speed bump! As long as the pricing is reasonable for you—like around £230—it should be a good boost for gaming as well. Just make sure your cooling setup is solid since temperatures can rise with the newer CPUs.
Great to hear you saw noticeable improvements! I’ll check my cooling setup.
Upgrading to the 14600KF is a solid move if you’re not using the stock cooler. Just make sure your motherboard can handle the BIOS update, and keep an eye on your PSU—650W should be enough for most setups. If you're looking for other options, you might also want to check out the 12700K and 13600K, especially since they’re around the same performance level for gaming.
Thanks for the tips! I’m not using the stock cooler, but do you think I should be concerned about my PSU handling the upgrade?
You shouldn’t have an issue with your upgrade if you stick to the 14th gen, but keep in mind that they’ve been a bit buggy, leading to high return rates. If you decide to go for it, try to get it on sale just in case you run into any problems. Losing money on a CPU is the last thing you need.
If you've been feeling a performance drop, then this upgrade should definitely help. The 12400F is only slightly faster than the Ryzen 5 5500 with DDR4 RAM. You'll likely get around a 25% boost in single-core performance and nearly double in multi-core tasks, which sounds worth it if the price is right!
Thanks so much for the info!

I appreciate your thoughts! I really just want to improve my gaming experience without spending too much.
