Is Upgrading from i7-9700k to i7-12700k a Good Move?

I'm considering upgrading my CPU from an i7-9700k to an i7-12700k. Currently, my setup includes an MSI Z390 Gaming Edge AC motherboard, an i7-9700k processor, an MSI 4090 GPU, 64GB of Corsair Vengeance DDR4 RAM, and a 1TB Samsung Evo 970 SSD. I found a good deal at Microcenter for the i7-12700k bundled with MSI motherboard and RAM for only $300. I want to keep using my existing DDR4 RAM and AIO cooler since they're compatible. While I'm not interested in switching to AMD because I think Intel is more cost-effective for me at the moment, I mainly game at 4K and 5120x1440 ultrawide. The i7-9700k performs well but seems to be bottlenecking my 4090 in some titles. Is this upgrade worth it?

I really like the 12700k, especially with that bundle you found. But since you have a 4090, keep in mind that with modern games, the CPU does play an important role at 4K. If you're looking for performance, that upgrade should help, but have you thought about waiting for better deals around holiday sales? You can likely save some cash or get an even better setup then!

Yeah, waiting for holiday sales sounds smart. You can manage with the 9700k a bit longer. f60a

I swapped an 8700k for the 12700k and the performance difference is massive. So if you're making a similar jump, you should notice a definite upgrade in gaming performance.

That's great to hear! If the difference is that drastic, it might be worth it for me too.

Yes, the 12700K is a significant improvement, but keep in mind that it's on the 1700 socket, which might limit future upgrades. You could explore AM5 options like the 7500F or 7700 for more longevity. There are some solid Intel options too, but consider pricing and availability.
