Hey folks! I upgraded to an i9-9900k seven years ago, and now I'm considering moving up to the i9-14900k. Here's my current setup:
- **Motherboard**: Asus z390-E
- **CPU**: Intel Core i9-9900k
- **GPU**: MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ventus 3X Plus 10GB GDDR6x
- **Memory**: 64GB DDR4 at 3200 MHz
I realize I'll need to change a lot if I upgrade. I'm also thinking about getting 64GB of DDR5 at 6000 MHz, but the prices are pretty high. I'm not sure if my current GPU will bottleneck with the new gear. Should I go ahead with the upgrade, or wait for better prices? The i9-14900k is currently priced at $559 USD.

That price is wild! You would definitely need an upgraded cooling solution, likely an AIO cooler, to handle the i9-14900k. Alternatively, I’d recommend considering the i7-13700 if you're not overclocking—you can get by with a decent air cooler and it should work well with your 3080.
Honestly, that price for the i9-14900k is pretty steep! You might want to consider going for an i5 instead, since the i9 can actually degrade under heavy use. Saving some cash could be a smarter move here.
For the best value, you could potentially stick with the i9-9900k and just swap out the GPU for a newer model, or consider grabbing some DDR5 if you're really intent on upgrading. If you're mainly gaming, your current system alongside a new GPU could keep you going without a full overhaul.
Are you noticing any bottlenecks with your current setup? It really depends on what you’re using it for. If you’re gaming, what resolution are you playing at? That could help narrow things down.
If you're aiming for DDR5, you might want to think about getting a Ryzen 3D model instead. Otherwise, if you're set on keeping your DDR4, the i7-14700k or maybe even another i9 is your best bet!

But if you update your BIOS, those issues with the i9 can be fixed! I have a 13700 that's been running smoothly after the update, so I wouldn’t write off the i9 immediately.
