Is Upgrading My RAM to 4x32GB Worth It for Gaming?

I currently have 64GB of RAM (2x32GB) in my gaming PC, which I also use for some experiments like LLM and SD. Given that I often max out my RAM and VRAM, I'm considering adding another 2x32GB RAM sticks. However, I've heard that doing so might slow down my gaming performance because I would need to drop the RAM frequency to 5600MHz when using all four sticks. Since cost isn't an issue and I plan to repurpose the motherboard and RAM for a homelab in the future, do you think the upgrade is worth it?

The memory controller on AM5 isn't great with four sticks. You might not hit the advertised speeds, and sometimes it can lead to instability. It's often better to go with two sticks for optimal performance. You might want to consider getting two 48GB sticks instead if you really need the extra capacity, as that can offer better stability and performance.

Totally agree! Plus, RAM compatibility can be a bit tricky. You want to avoid potential boot issues or performance drops.

If you're not hitting RAM limits now, adding more might just be a waste. Your PC won't slow down, but you likely won't see any real benefits either. If you tend to run out of RAM, that's a different story, but be mindful of the performance drops you might face when switching to four sticks.

Exactly! If your gaming performance is solid now, it might not be worth messing with your setup unless you're genuinely running out of RAM.

Your X3D CPU does handle RAM a bit differently, but running 4 sticks generally isn't the way to go. Most games won’t benefit from having 128GB of RAM unless you’re running specific heavy workloads. For casual gaming, 64GB is already plenty in most cases. Unless you're doing something really resource-heavy, I'd stick with what you have.
