I've had a solid PC build since 2015 with parts like the Intel Core i7-6700K and a 980 Ti, but I'm considering my first upgrade. I'm mostly looking to boost my SSD to 2 TB, but I'm also curious about switching from the 980 Ti to a 5070 Ti. Do I need to worry about bottlenecks with my current setup, or is it fine to go ahead with just the GPU upgrade? I'd prefer not to replace my CPU and motherboard right now, especially since I've read that newer Intel chips have some degradation issues and that AMD might be a better long-term choice. What do you all think?

For sure, upgrading to the 5070 Ti will be a major improvement over the 980 Ti, even on your older CPU. But just be ready for some performance limitations due to the CPU. If you can set aside another $400 for a CPU, motherboard, and RAM upgrade later, that’s probably the best move overall. But if the GPU is all you can do right now, then go for it!
Don't stress too much about bottlenecks; there's always going to be some. I'd recommend looking at the 9070 XT instead since it offers similar performance at a better price point. However, realistically, your CPU won't fully utilize a modern GPU. If you're considering a switch to AMD, going for the AM5 platform is a solid idea since AM4 is slowly being phased out. I'd say upgrade your GPU first for a noticeable boost, and then plan for a motherboard and CPU upgrade later on.
Sounds like a plan! I'll wait until I have a better budget for a full upgrade. Just realized my RAM won't be compatible with AM5, so I'm looking at a complete overhaul soon. This PC has served me well for a decade, but I think it's time to build something new!
