Is upgrading to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D worth it with a 9070 XT GPU?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my GPU, and I've narrowed it down to the Radeon 9070 XT since the pricing seems pretty good. Currently, I'm using an RX 6900 XT, but I'm really eager to step up to a high-end GPU. My CPU is a Ryzen 7 5800X, which has served me well, but I'm wondering if I should also upgrade to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D to fully utilize my new GPU. The processor costs around $460, and while price isn't too much of a concern for me, I want to ensure that the upgrade is worth it. If I keep my current CPU, will it handle the new GPU effectively, or will I be facing significant bottleneck issues?

I'd say stick with your 5800X for now! Once you install the 9070 XT, test the performance in the games you play. You might find that the CPU holds up just fine, especially if you're gaming at 1440p or higher. You might not see any major bottlenecks unless you're targeting ultra settings or competitive frame rates.

Exactly! Upgrading isn’t always necessary unless you notice significant performance issues. Just enjoy the new GPU first, and see how it performs alongside your current setup.

I agree! The 5800X should last a while longer, and if you want to upgrade later, the AM4 platform is smooth for now.

I have the 5700X alongside a 9070 XT at 1440p, and honestly, it’s been a great experience. Sure, a better CPU could give more frames, but the performance has been satisfying overall. You might find your 5800X does just fine!

Honestly, upgrading to the 9800X3D isn’t worth it right now, mainly because you'd need a new motherboard and DDR5 RAM, which are pretty expensive due to supply issues. Stick to your 5800X and enjoy the boost from the new GPU. What specs is your monitor? You might get better returns by investing in a higher resolution display instead!

Good point! I hadn’t thought about the whole AM4 to AM5 switch. It's like rebuilding the whole PC, which doesn't make sense if you're happy with how your current setup runs.

Yeah, I recently got a 4K monitor and feel like I'm not getting full use out of it. Maybe the GPU upgrade will change that!

If you primarily play at 1440p or 4K, your current setup should handle the 9070 XT well. Just ensure you're running high settings to minimize potential CPU bottlenecks. If you're into competitive gaming, though, a small upgrade to a faster AM4 CPU could help.

Great advice! I'm just looking for more stability at higher resolutions. Sounds like my 5800X might still hold up for now.

Right? I'm also curious if there are any solid AM4 options out there for a future upgrade without going all out on a new system.

For now, your best bet is to upgrade to the 9070 XT and see how it performs with your current CPU. If you notice significant issues down the line, that's when you can consider upgrading to something like the 14600K for better performance. Just don’t overthink it too much right now!

Thanks! That makes sense. Honestly, I was just looking to see if I was missing something, but it sounds like my priorities should be focused on the GPU for now!

I agree! And if you're still not happy later, you can always revisit the idea of upgrading the CPU.
