Is Upgrading to AM5 Worth the Cost?

Hey everyone! I'm currently using a system with an R5 2600, RX 5700, 16GB of 3200 MHz RAM, a B450M motherboard, and a 600W bronze PSU, and I play on a 1080p 144Hz monitor. I'm considering a meaningful upgrade and have two paths in mind:

1. Build a new system with an R5 7500, RX 5070, 16GB of 5600 MHz RAM (planning to add another stick later), a B650M Aorus Elite motherboard, and a 650W PSU, which totals about $1,092.

2. Go for an R7 5700X and an RX 4070 Super for around $738 (or $790 with a new PSU).

The big question for me is whether the $354 difference for switching to the AM5 platform is worth it in the long run. What do you all think?

Nah, I think the AM5 will dip in price once AM6 comes out, just like AM4 did. Plus, the RX 5070 isn’t a huge leap from the 4070 Super. Maybe it's not worth that big jump right now.

I’m kind of in the same situation with a similar setup. I’m debating whether to upgrade my GPU to a 5060 Ti with my current AM4 system or transition to AM5 and keep my old RX 6600. Upgrading my GPU would force me to think about a new monitor, and I really don’t want to go that route right now.

I’m not exactly sure what performance you’re looking for, but for the AM5 upgrade, I’d suggest going with a Ryzen 5 7600X instead of the 7500. You might also want to swap the RX 5070 for a 9060 XT to see a nice boost in gaming performance!

Totally agree! The card upgrade sounds solid. Plus, AM5 is going to be more future-proof than AM4—once AM6 rolls out, AM5 will still have support for a while.

Oh, I just realized you’re on a 1080p 144Hz monitor. If that’s the case, having the 12GB VRAM from the 9060 XT could really last you a good while, especially since you're not upgrading your monitor anytime soon!
