Is Using DDR4 RAM a Good Idea as Prices for DDR5 Continue to Rise?

With DDR5 RAM prices skyrocketing, I'm torn about whether it's a smart move to stick with DDR4 for my new PC build. I'm not looking to create a super high-end setup, but I'm curious about any negative consequences I might face by choosing DDR4 instead. Will I be limiting myself or facing upgrade issues down the line?

If you're okay with sticking to DDR4, consider that you might not need a whole new build in a few years. But if you do upgrade, you might find it harder to find compatible parts later.

True, upgrading platforms is tough these days. Good advice!

Definitely something to think about for future-proofing.

If you go with DDR4, you'll likely be locked into older socket types like AM4 or LGA 1200/1700. That means if you buy a Ryzen CPU, you'll have to stick with certain generations, which isn't terrible since the 5000 series is solid. Just keep in mind, if you decide to upgrade the CPU later, you'll need a new motherboard and RAM to support it.

What if I choose a different brand instead of Ryzen?

You still have options, but sticking with Ryzen could limit you.

Just throw out your budget and let us know what games you want to play and your intended resolution. Without that info, it's hard to give specific advice. For reference, I'm budgeting 1000-1500€ and mainly playing Elden Ring while doing some ML tasks.

Exact resolution and frame rate preferences would help too!

DDR4 prices have also gone up, though not as significantly as DDR5. If you're going the DDR4 route, consider the Ryzen 5800X3D; it's a good balance of performance and price right now.

But without waiting for DDR5 to drop, won't that be limiting?

TheOptimist23 -

Sure, but prices are unpredictable, and waiting might not pay off.

Going for DDR4 isn't a bad choice, but it's worth noting that platforms supporting it are nearing the end of their lifecycle. The AM4 socket was introduced almost a decade ago, and while some CPUs still perform well, it might make more sense to save up for DDR5 if you can afford it, as prices may stabilize eventually.

Yeah, but how long do I have to wait? I don't want to rush it either.
