Is using SharePoint and Azure for file storage a good option?

I'm looking into setting up a centralized file storage system for our company as requested by our boss. We have about 70-80 employees and deal mainly with Excel, PDF, and QuickBooks files. The plan is to use SharePoint through Microsoft 365 for our primary storage, creating folders for different departments like HR and Accounting, which everyone can access via SharePoint or Teams. Once we reach the storage limit, I would offload older or less frequently accessed files to Azure Storage. I'm curious whether this setup is practical for our company size, how efficient SharePoint is for daily file access (especially concerning QuickBooks and large Excel files), whether Azure File Storage is user-friendly for our IT staff, and if there are any better alternatives or potential issues I should be aware of.

Using SharePoint for your general file storage sounds great, but QuickBooks files are tricky. If they require multi-user mode, they can't be stored in SharePoint at all, because they need to be on a local computer running the QB Database Server. For single-user mode files, you might sync them with OneDrive, but it's not officially supported, and there are risks involved. SharePoint will handle your other file types fine, but be cautious with syncing large libraries through OneDrive - hitting 100,000 files can lead to sync issues. If you do go for Azure Files, let’s discuss how authentication works for user access as well, since it could get complex.

QuickBooks definitely needs Azure Files, ideally the Premium version or Azure NetApp files for better performance. Based on a chat I had with a vendor, SharePoint wouldn't work well for QuickBooks files due to those requirements. For other documents, SharePoint is likely sufficient, but just keep an eye on the size limits.”},{
