I just got a new laptop with Windows 11, but I'm not a fan of it and want to switch to Linux. I'm considering trying out Zorin OS's free version, but I'm unsure if it's the right choice or if I should start with something like Linux Mint instead. Is the free version of Zorin any good, or are there important features that are locked behind a paywall?

Linux Mint comes highly recommended for most beginners, but Zorin OS free version isn't a bad option either. Just keep in mind that Zorin may require a bit more resources to run smoothly. That's something to consider if you're using a laptop with average specs.

I can't say Zorin is a bad distro, but it might be a bit over-hyped. From my experience, I usually point people towards Linux Mint, especially if they’re starting out. It’s stable and based on Ubuntu LTS, so it’s pretty reliable for new users. If you have newer hardware, you might also want to check out OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, as it’s good for the latest tech.

The free version of Zorin paywalls some features, but nothing essential that you can't find for free elsewhere. It includes a complete office suite and some nice themes, but if you’re not interested in supporting the development, you can skip paying for it without losing crucial functionality.
