Issues with My MacBook Pro After Following Cleaning Guidelines—Need Advice

Hey folks, I'm hoping to get some insights or advice on a situation I'm dealing with. I own a 14-inch MacBook Pro M4 from 2024 that's still under a year old. Following Apple's official cleaning guidelines, I used a cloth slightly dampened with 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) to clean the lid. Shortly after that, my display started flickering with horizontal lines, and the trackpad stopped responding. I reached out to Apple Support, and they acknowledged my issue, noting that they would consider coverage for it, which is documented in my case. I then brought my MacBook to an Apple Authorized Service Provider, but they quoted me ₹69,311, citing physical damage and scratches that I didn't notice before submitting my laptop. Apple's Senior Support team later declined any goodwill, stating the same about the physical damage. I followed their cleaning guidelines, and now I'm being asked to pay a hefty amount on a device that's practically new. Has anyone experienced something similar? Any suggestions on my next steps? Should I consider going to a consumer forum in India?

It sounds like a tough situation, but cleaning the exterior of your MacBook shouldn't cause internal issues like screen flickering. Unless there was significant pressure applied to the screen while cleaning, it’s hard to see how that would happen. Maybe check if there are any specific details in your service documentation that clarify the damage claim? Good luck!

If you're really sure you followed the cleaning guidelines, I’d recommend looking into a consumer action group. It may help to bring attention to your case, especially if you think there's a flaw in the way Apple handles repairs related to their guidelines.

I doubt that using IPA on the outside would lead to that kind of damage. Just make sure that when you clean, you're not over-saturating your cloth. It’s always better to use pre-made wipes, as they have the right concentration for cleaning. Did you happen to notice if there was any liquid getting into the device? You might want to get a second opinion from another repair shop.

You should definitely call Apple back! Ask them to send you a box to mail in for repair. It’s worth a shot to see if you can get a different response. Also, consider checking other repair shops; they might give you a fair quote without all the extra charges.
