Hey everyone! I finally made the switch from Windows to Linux and installed Linux Mint on my laptop after some issues during my backup process. So far, everything seems to be running smoothly! I've installed Brave for browsing and Steam for my games, which is great.
However, I feel a bit lost on what to do next. I just need it for everyday tasks like paying bills and checking emails. I do want to learn about doing weekly backups, finding a privacy-focused browser for casual browsing (so I'm not logged in), and installing Signal. Plus, I'd like to change my desktop background at some point.
Overall, I'm just wondering if there are any essential tips or tools I should know about as I get settled in. Also, I have a bunch of Windows backup files packed into zip files, and I need to figure out how to access my important documents from those. It feels a bit anticlimactic, and I'd love any advice!

For backups, you can use Timeshift; it's really handy! Also, it wouldn't hurt to learn some terminal commands. It's not necessary, but it can be really beneficial down the line. Otherwise, just keep using your computer as you normally would and enjoy!
Just enjoy your new computer! The operating system is just a tool to get things done, so focus on what you want to do with it. It sounds like you’re off to a great start by installing what you need. If it’s running well, that’s awesome!
I think it's totally normal to feel uncertain. You've made the leap to Linux, and it does sound easier than you expected! Just keep playing around with it.
Just a heads up, I've heard mixed things about the security of Signal. And if you want to change your background, just right-click on the current one on your desktop. It's that simple!
Both Brave and Firefox have profiles. This lets you separate your browsing sessions, which might help with your privacy concerns. You can log into your email in one profile and browse YouTube in another without being tracked. Just make sure to set your browsers to automatically clear everything upon closing!
No need to complain about everything working smoothly! Embrace it! It's great that you find Mint easy to use. Just remember to keep it updated regularly. Also, some Windows apps won’t be available, but you’ll find alternatives or workarounds for most things.
Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely check out how updates work.

I’m going to look into Timeshift and terminal tutorials!
