Key Skills for Junior Backend Developers

As a junior backend developer currently learning .NET and its various components like ASP.NET, Entity Framework, and SQL, I'm curious about what other skills or knowledge I should focus on to enhance my employability. While I understand that practical experience is crucial, I'm also considering other areas of study like Discrete Math, Data Structures and Algorithms, and Networking. I even thought about taking the MIT course on Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs, but I'm unsure if that would be excessive. What additional skills should I pursue to make myself a stronger candidate in the job market?

Don't limit yourself solely to backend development. While it’s great to focus on backend skills, gaining some frontend experience can really boost your teamwork abilities. Many jobs expect developers to be somewhat full stack, even if they don’t explicitly state it. Having that broader perspective can help you fit into teams more fluidly.

I agree! I've done quite a bit of front-end work, even as a backend developer. It's useful to understand the entire flow, even if you're mainly focusing on backend stuff.
