Laptop Freezing After Replacing Fans – Need Help!

Hey everyone, I'm in need of some serious help! I recently did some tech support on my Acer Nitro 5 (AN517-52) since the fans weren't working. After ordering new ones, I carefully replaced them by unplugging the battery and holding down the startup button for 15 seconds. I removed the old fans and plugged in the new ones, ensuring everything was tightened up. However, as soon as I started charging the laptop and booted up a game, it froze after the fans ramped up. I even encountered a blue screen with a WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR during the process. I'm wondering if maybe I didn't plug something back in properly or if the new fans are somehow causing issues. Any ideas?

It sounds like you might have a couple of issues at play here. How did you determine the fans were faulty initially? Just not hearing them or did you get any error messages? If you got off-brand fans, they might not be the correct specifications for your laptop. Acer has a reputation for sketchy quality control, so that's something to keep in mind.

They were making a ridiculous rattling noise even at low speeds, and it got worse when they sped up. I took my laptop to a repair shop not too long ago for cleaning, so I know it wasn't dust buildup. The new fans stopped the rattling, but now this freezing at high speeds is really frustrating! I bought them off Amazon and just hoped they would fit correctly.

Make sure the fan plugs are connected correctly since they should only fit one way. If they're reversed, the fans might spin backward and cause overheating issues. It's crucial they connect without much force; otherwise, you could run into problems.

I'm pretty sure I connected them right. The freezing happens only when I charge the laptop and run games, which triggers the fans to go full blast. I’m worried I might have accidentally damaged something while unplugging cables. Can you scratch a motherboard while working on it?
