Looking for a Gaming Monitor Recommendation for My Son’s Birthday

Hey everyone! My son, who turns 17 this Friday, finally told me he wants a gaming monitor for his PC after lots of hints. He really wants something that can boost his FPS and mentioned wanting a 120Hz refresh rate. He also needs one with at least two HDMI ports so he can connect his PlayStation too. I'm on a budget of around $200 to $300, maybe a bit more if necessary. I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have for great gaming monitors. Thanks a lot!

Digging deeper into specs can help. If your son plays games like RUST, finding out if his PC can handle 1080p or 1440p will guide you. Remember, 120Hz is good, but monitors with 144Hz or more can fit within your budget. An IPS display could balance performance and quality nicely.

He does play RUST, so I’ll keep that in mind. Thanks for clarifying! I'll poke around for his PC specs too.

If you have a Staples nearby, swing by and check their in-store deals. I got a 32" curved monitor there for just $125. Sometimes you can find great bargains on monitors, so it's worth looking in person!

Before you buy, ask your son if he prefers 1080p or 1440p resolution. If he mainly plays on his PlayStation, I recommend 1080p. For that, the MSI MAG 244F (23.8", 200Hz) is great and only costs about $100. If he leans towards 1440p, consider the MSI MAG 275QF (27.0", 180Hz) priced around $180. Just narrow down the resolution preference first!

Thanks for the pointers! I'll definitely ask him about that before making a purchase.

This AOC monitor is a fantastic option for the price range you're looking at: https://pcpartpicker.com/product/kJP8TW/aoc-q27g3xmn-270-2560-x-1440-180-hz-monitor-q27g3xmn. It’s a 1440p, 180Hz mini-LED that shines in brightness for HDR too! If he has an Nvidia GPU, enabling Nvidia Pulsar can really enhance the motion clarity.

Check out refurbished options; I found a good deal on a 240Hz OLED for $272 which comes with a warranty. That's hard to beat for the price! Just make sure to consider the potential lifespan of OLED screens if that's something that concerns you.

I've had an IPS for over a decade; it's worth noting that OLEDs can have shorter lifespans due to the organic materials used.
