Confused About Refresh Rate Differences: 60Hz vs 144Hz vs 240Hz

I'm trying to understand the differences between various monitor refresh rates, specifically 60Hz, 144Hz, and 240Hz. Some say the differences are minimal, but others swear by the improvements. Physically and biologically, I know there's a difference, but when I check my setup, I can't seem to notice it. I usually play games like Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which aren't competitive shooters. I toggle between 60Hz and 144Hz settings but don't see a change. I've confirmed my monitor is running at 144Hz using testufo.com. Is there anything specific I need to do in my settings? Additionally, I'm considering upgrading to 4K and OLED in the future, but should I be concerned about refresh rates if my experience hasn't changed significantly after moving from 27-inch 720p 60Hz to 32-inch 2K 144Hz?

Have you checked your cables and display settings? I've seen cases where the display is capped at 60Hz due to cable compatibility. Also, make sure your PC can consistently run games at 144 FPS for you to notice the benefits!

Try filming your monitor with your phone in slow-motion; that might help you see the differences clearly. If you still can’t tell a difference there, then there might be an issue with your setup. It's critical to have everything configured correctly to experience the refresh rate benefits.

Make sure your monitor is definitely set to 144Hz. It could be that it’s not running at that refresh rate right out of the box, and you might have to enable it through the on-screen menu of the monitor itself.

Generally, a higher refresh rate improves motion clarity and response time, but you’ll really notice it if you’re into competitive gaming. If you enjoy story-driven games like the one you mentioned, focusing on visual quality over refresh rate is often a better investment. OLED screens are a fantastic upgrade too! So, in your case, don’t stress about the refresh rate too much since it might not be as relevant for how you game.

Not everyone perceives refresh rate differences equally. Moving from 60Hz to 144Hz is usually noticeable, especially when moving the mouse around. But if you can’t tell the difference, it could mean your eyesight isn't picking up on those nuances. Maybe check in with an optometrist if you haven’t recently; changes in vision often go unnoticed.
