I'm a single mom and recently my son asked for a gaming computer for his birthday. I'm not sure what to go for since I don't know much about gaming PCs, and I'm hoping to keep the budget around $1000. He currently has an Xbox Series X, a Meta VR headset, and an older Nintendo Switch, and he enjoys games like Roblox, Minecraft, Red Dead Redemption, Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Odyssey, World of Warships Legends, and more. I also need to consider that he splits his time between my house and his dad's house; would a laptop be a better option? Any recommendations or tips would be greatly appreciated!

While a laptop is more portable, keep in mind that they’re generally less powerful than desktops for the same price. If you can, look into used PCs or building one with a decent graphics card. That can give you better performance for gaming. You can often get a used office PC and upgrade it with a good GPU for less than $600, and it would outperform an entry-level laptop.
Honestly, your son might be just fine with his Xbox for now, especially given how expensive PCs have become. If he really wants a PC, something like a Steam Deck could be a good compromise. It's portable and can play many of the games he likes while also being fun to take to different houses.
I totally get your dilemma! If you decide on a PC, make sure to sell the Xbox to up the budget. A decent gaming PC setup can give so much more value and better performance in the long term. Just remember that you might need to buy a monitor, keyboard, and mouse as well, which can add to the costs.
Considering he enjoys gaming and moves around, getting a gaming laptop could work, but think about the longevity. Laptop components can age quicker, and they are harder to upgrade. If he really gets into gaming, a desktop might be more suitable later. Just get a sturdy cooling pad, and you should be good!
I think a laptop could be a better option since it’s easier to move between houses. You'll only need to get a mouse and some headphones. Here's a good one I found that should work well for gaming: [Laptop Link](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0FFDDFW47). Just keep in mind that laptops can be a bit loud and might heat up, so a cooling pad might be a good idea too!

That’s a great idea! Building a PC can be daunting though if you haven’t done it before, but it’s rewarding and could give him a great gaming experience in the long run.
