Looking for a Lightweight Linux Distro for Media Streaming on My ThinkPad

I have a ThinkPad X240 with 8GB of RAM and an Intel i5-4300U processor, but it's been booting super slowly—sometimes taking 5 to 7 minutes with Kubuntu. I really want to use this laptop primarily for media streaming via Firefox and Stremio, and I have it hooked up to my TV for that. Is there a lighter Linux distro out there that could help me speed things up, or should I expect boot times to still be slow no matter what I try?

Your setup should handle media streaming without a hitch. I get solid performance even when streaming games at 1080p on a similar machine. But yeah, those boot times are concerning. I recommend ditching the HDD in favor of an SSD—it made my boot time drop to about 30 seconds!

You might want to check out LibreELEC. It's designed for media streaming and boots directly into Kodi, so it doesn't use much in the way of system resources. I've got it running on a low-end AMD processor with 2GB of RAM, and it works great for me.

Sounds like your hard drive might be the biggest issue here. Consider upgrading to a SATA SSD; it's relatively cheap, and I've seen huge improvements in boot times—my X230 boots in about 40 seconds now. Switching distros might not make a big difference if your HDD is the bottleneck.

That's definitely a long boot time. My old T43 runs Void with XFCE and boots in under 2 minutes. You might look into lighter distros like Lubuntu, Xubuntu, or MX Linux with XFCE—they're known for being efficient. If you're willing to try a bit harder, Void is great too, just a little more installation work.

I use Debian with KDE Plasma on a very similar setup and it's been solid for me. No complaints! It should handle your media streaming needs without much hassle.
