Looking for a Smart Scanner Solution for Batch Document Scanning

I'm in a bit of a bind here. An executive at my office has asked me to find a scanner that can automatically detect when a stack of pages is done scanning, so it can save files accordingly without manual intervention. Currently, we have a basic Epson scanner with limited functionality: it can either scan everything as one multi-page PDF or save each page as individual PDFs.

We have around 50 bankers boxes filled with documents to scan, and the executive wants to be able to load a whole stack, scan the pages, insert a blank sheet as a separator, and then continue with the next set of pages. I've been out of the scanning loop for about 20 years, so I'm not sure if this kind of automation is even possible without a huge workforce. Is there a way to do this, or is this request a bit too far-fetched? Thanks for any advice!

Honestly, it sounds like a challenging request, but the good news is that it might be possible with your current Epson setup. You may have some options to scan multiple pages and then separate them into different files based on blank pages or certain document markers. Look into specific features like "Scanning Multi-Page Originals as Separate Files"—these might lead you in the right direction!

That's a clever workaround! If the Epson can't do it, saving everything as one PDF and then sorting later could work, but it requires some manual effort to manage those files afterward.
