Hey everyone! I'm diving into the world of Linux for the first time as I'm about to build a new PC. Until now, Linux was just the "pinguin thingy" I associated with memes. But I'm excited to switch it up! Here's what I've got for my specs:
- Ryzen 9700X
- AMD RX 9070 XT
- 32GB DDR5 6000 CL30 RAM
- 2 M.2 drives.
My main concern is that I'm not super tech-savvy. I can usually troubleshoot issues on Windows with some searching, but Linux feels a bit daunting to me. I want a distro that is stable, allows for gaming (especially on platforms like Steam and GOG), works with Steam VR, and is compatible with my QNAP NAS. I'm also hoping for some good audio ripping software since I rely on my FLAC files.
I've heard Manjaro might be a good fit for me because it's developed in Austria, but it honestly sounds a bit intimidating. Distrochooser has suggested Zorin OS, Mint, and elementary OS as top candidates. So far, I recognize Mint but don't know much about the others. I've got some time to figure this out since my parts won't arrive until late August, but any advice on which distro to choose would be appreciated!

I've had great experiences with both CachyOS and Linux Mint. Mint is user-friendly and very stable, perfect for newcomers. CachyOS is super fast and also beginner-friendly. No worries about playing games; SteamVR works well on most distros. For those games on dlsite, Lutris should help you run them, and for GOG games, Lutris is also a great choice. Audio ripping can be handled easily with tools like abcde. So yeah, you can't go wrong with those!
That sounds interesting! I’ll look into CachyOS further. And for dlsite, I'm assuming it’s similar to classic flash games but probably with some Japanese flair? Sounds cool!
