I've been using Linux for a long time, and right now I'm running Debian and Fedora on my desktop and home lab setup. However, I'm currently using a 13" 2012 MacBook Pro, and it's been pretty sluggish with any Linux distro I try, especially with my favorite desktop environments like Gnome or KDE. I'm searching for recommendations on a decent Linux laptop that has a good trackpad and options for expandability. I've had a bad experience with a ThinkPad T460, which is now a Hackintosh in my studio. My budget is quite limited, around 400 AUD (280 USD).

I just installed Zorin on a similar vintage MacBook Pro and it works really well. I swapped out the hard drive for an SSD, which made a big difference—it might be worth considering!
You might want to check out the Dell Latitude series. They’re often available at good prices since many are being retired and they can’t keep up with Windows 11 anymore.
Interesting setup you have! So you're using a Mac for Linux and a ThinkPad for macOS? That’s a unique mix!
Upgrading to an M series Mac could be a good move, but just be cautious with Linux on laptops—drivers can sometimes be tricky to manage.
Used ThinkPads are usually a solid choice for Linux! They tend to have great support and build quality, so I'd recommend giving them another shot if you haven't already.
I totally agree! I'm using a ThinkPad T490 with Fedora Workstation and it runs like a dream!
Any laptop that's 5-10 years old should be fine as long as it has at least a 4-core hyperthreading CPU and 16GB of RAM. Look for used enterprise models like HP EliteBooks or Dell XPS—they're durable and often pack great specs for the price, especially if you check local vendors or marketplaces.
What issues did you face with the T460 and Linux? I’d be curious to know since I’ve heard mixed reviews about that model.

I've got a Dell Latitude D630 running MX Linux, and it has dual boot with Windows 10. I keep Windows for streaming Netflix and YouTube, but otherwise, I use Linux daily!
