I'm finally ready to upgrade my outdated PC from 2016, which has become a bit of a struggle. My current specs include an i7 3770, 12GB of DDR3 RAM, and a GTX 1060 6GB. Despite optimizing my settings, my GPU is only being utilized about 13% during gameplay. I'm currently averaging 123 FPS in Valorant, but my 1% lows can drop to around 38 FPS, which isn't ideal. I'm a high school student managing my own expenses, but I've saved up enough for a decent upgrade now.
I recently bought a new monitor, the AOC 24G4 with 180Hz refresh rate, which is a significant upgrade from my old TV. My question is: what CPU would you suggest to make the most of my GTX 1060 and achieve smoother gameplay? I've got a budget of $200-300 for the CPU, and I'm planning a full rebuild, including upgrading the motherboard and RAM. I'm also looking for a CPU that balances gaming and productivity since I do some work on my PC too. Thanks for any advice!

If you’re doing a full rebuild, keep in mind that upgrading to a new CPU on your current motherboard won't be beneficial. Since you mentioned planning to upgrade everything, you’ll need a new motherboard and RAM as well. It's great you’re keeping your GTX 1060 for now; it should still handle Valorant well!
First, what’s your budget for the CPU? That’s a big factor in choosing the right one.
I’m looking at a budget of about $200-300.
For your current and future setup, you can’t go wrong with either the Ryzen 5 5600 or i5 12400F—they’ll really help reduce bottlenecks and provide a better experience at higher FPS, especially when you've got a good monitor now!
Definitely check out the Ryzen 5 5600X as well! Lots of gamers rave about its performance. Just make sure you budget for a good motherboard and at least 16GB of DDR4 RAM too, which you can find pretty reasonably these days.
You might want to look into the Ryzen 5 5600 or the Intel i5 12400F. Both are excellent for gaming and productivity, fitting right around your budget. They’ll significantly boost your performance in games like Valorant without breaking the bank!
Good to know! I was leaning towards the Ryzen 5 5600. Is that a solid choice for high FPS?

Got it! I thought maybe I could keep the old setup going by just swapping in a new CPU. Thanks for the heads up!
