Hey everyone! I'm at the stage of building my first PC and I'm hitting some bumps in the road. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the heatsink installation mechanics on the AMD Ryzen 7 3700x and unfortunately, I somehow damaged the CPU too. To make matters worse, when I first assembled the PC, it wouldn't even power on; the fans didn't spin or anything. I've had a couple of folks take a look at it, but no one has figured out what the issue is. I'm considering getting a new CPU and heatsink, so I'd love some recommendations. Here's my current parts list:
- Asus TUF GAMING B550M-PLUS WIFI II Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard
- G.Skill Ripjaws V 64 GB (2 x 32 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory
- Toshiba DT01ACA050 500 GB 3.5" 7200 RPM Internal Hard Drive
- Fractal Design North ATX Mid Tower Case
- Asus TUF Gaming B 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply
- Microsoft Windows 11 Pro OEM - DVD 64-bit
Thanks for any help you can offer!

If you can snag a 5700x3d or a 5800x3d at a decent price, I’d say go for it. Newegg currently has the 5800x for around $183 plus tax, which seems like a steal! Oh, and definitely consider adding an SSD; it's pretty wild to think of using a traditional hard drive in 2025.
I know you’re not a fan of the heatsink on the 3700x, but just a heads up, the heatsink mechanism is pretty much the same for all AM4 CPUs. What exactly do you find challenging about it? Maybe I can help.
I get the frustration with the heatsink! It can be a pain to get it on and off. I remember struggling with those latches too—it feels like you need three hands sometimes! Have you considered looking at alternatives? It might be worth exploring easier options for your new build.
