I'm on the hunt for an effective email filing and archiving solution that has API support. My client, who operates in the construction industry, needs to archive emails by specific projects because these emails are retained for long periods due to potential legal claims. They often have thousands of emails per project over the years. We've been considering MailManager, but the lack of API support complicates integration with our internal systems. Does anyone have recommendations for other platforms or insights on how to approach this?

I’d recommend NetDocuments. It comes with API support and has Outlook add-ins that help file emails directly to project folders. The add-in even predicts where you want to file things, which can save a lot of time. I’m not a huge fan of it overall, but for your needs, it should work well.
To be honest, email isn't really the best system for project organization, especially with so many messages involved. There are dedicated software solutions that have been developed for this very reason. They can handle not just emails but other file types as well, with indexing and filing options. If your client insists on using email, maybe setting up local email servers just for archiving could be a workaround.
Have you checked out CloudFiler? They offer API support and might be worth considering. We looked into switching from MailManager to them, but last I heard, they didn't have a US-based data center. They promised to keep us posted on that.
Right now, I'm testing MailArchiva, which has a REST API. So far, it’s looking good for our needs, although scripting isn’t a critical factor for us. It might fit your criteria!
That sounds like a tough spot! Maybe a hybrid approach could work where you use both email and a proper archival system?
