Looking for Linux Distro Recommendations for a New User

Hey everyone! I'm pretty new to Linux (kind of a hard asterisk on that). I work in cybersecurity, so I've dabbled a bit with Kali Linux, but my experience is still limited. I'm considering switching my main PC to Linux (thinking about dual booting) but I'm not sure which distro would be the best fit for me. I've been using Windows forever and I'm comfortable with that UI/UX, so I'd love something similar to help me adjust before diving into command line distros. I game a lot and do a fair amount of productivity work too. The distros I'm looking into right now are:

* Zorin OS
* Linux Mint
* Bazzite
* PopOS
* SteamOS (got a Steam Deck, so wondering if this works for productivity)
* NobaraOS

My hardware setup is:

1. AMD Ryzen 9 5900x
2. Gigabyte RTX 3080 GPU

Any suggestions would be really appreciated! 🙂

Avoid using Kali as your daily driver; it’s really not designed for that. If you want something stable for everyday use, try openSUSE LEAP.

If you're looking for stability, Debian might be the way to go, though it does have older packages. Fedora offers a more up-to-date experience while still being relatively stable. And if you're interested in a unique approach to package management, NixOS is an option, but it could be tricky for a newbie. Just be sure to use BTRFS with snapshots from the beginning!

I started with PopOS and it worked really well for me—no crazy troubleshooting during installation and it ran smoothly afterward! Linux Mint is also worth considering since it's known to be beginner-friendly. If you're gaming a lot, SteamOS is decent, but it might not be the best choice for general use due to some quirky issues in desktop mode.
