Hey everyone! I'm just starting out in the sysadmin field and I've got an interview coming up. Since I'm still learning the ropes, I could really use some advice from those with experience. What should I focus on learning more deeply? Is this profession challenging? Also, what basic skills should I highlight during my interview? Thanks a lot for your help!

One of the best tips is to document everything you learn and do, but keep it concise—no need to write a novel! Familiarize yourself with your infrastructure and devices, as it’ll help you quickly identify issues. Don't hesitate to ask questions; it's way better than messing something up. Consider creating a small homelab at home or even using virtual machines and containers at work to test things out. Automation is key, so try to automate as much as you can.

Absolutely! Asking questions is crucial. If you find a mentor, don’t take that for granted; they have a lot of experience to share. Just remember, feeling like an imposter is common, but you should push through it. Also, don’t overlook the importance of soft skills!

Make sure you prioritize your learning based on what’s most applicable to the job you’re applying for. Think about what core skills the role requires and start there. Asking specific questions about what to focus on will help you get more tailored advice.
