Hey folks! I'm on the hunt for a decent 4TB M.2 SSD to gift to a family friend who's getting into content creation. We're aiming for a budget of under $400 Canadian. Here's the scoop: he does light photography and video editing in 4K, and his parents want this as a surprise for his upcoming computer build. They've already bought the CPU, 16GB DDR4 RAM, and motherboard, so we're just missing the storage.
He mentioned that having a single 4TB drive is preferable for handling larger file sizes instead of splitting it between two SSDs. I'm not entirely sure what features to look for, like write endurance or read/write speeds, since the last SSD I got was a budget 2TB model that's worked well so far. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

I recommend going with Samsung SSDs. The Western Digital ones are good too, but just keep in mind that they can be double-sided, which might not fit all motherboards with screw-less locks. Samsung's are typically single-sided, making them more versatile for fitting into various setups.
I found the Western Digital WD Blue SN5000 4TB, which could be a great fit. You can check it out on PC Part Picker; it usually offers decent performance for the price!
Check out these options:
- Crucial T500 4TB (PCIe 4.0)
- WD Black SN850X 4TB (PCIe 4.0)
- Samsung 990 Pro 4TB (PCIe 4.0)
- TeamGroup MP44 4TB (great value pick).
If you can snag the Crucial T500 in the low-to-mid 300 CAD range, that’s a solid buy. It provides excellent 4K performance and endurance for handling projects and games.
The SN850X is my go-to for Gen 4. Sandisk and Samsung have better controllers, though the Samsung recently shifted to less reliable LPDDR4. Just a heads up!

I personally prefer my Samsung SSDs, can't go wrong there!
