I've recently had a frustrating experience with Network Solutions after they took over Domain-dot-Com. I received a notice about my domain's expiration just minutes after it expired, making it impossible to avoid a reinstatement fee of $36 on top of the renewal cost. I'm planning to change my domain provider when my other domain is up for renewal in December, so I'm seeking recommendations for reliable domain registrars that don't have outrageous fees or sleazy practices. What services would you suggest?

Have you thought about using Cloudflare? They don’t have any markups which is pretty great if you're looking for straightforward pricing.
Just a heads up, be cautious of registrars that offer the first year really cheap. Sometimes they hit you hard with higher prices on renewals. For instance, my brother warned me about GoDaddy's pricing practices. I've been using Openprovider; they let you know 28 days before a domain expires and have an auto-extend option if you keep your account funded. It works great if you have multiple domains.
Namesilo has worked pretty well for me. I have about 15 domains there, and they don't have crazy markups. Plus, their auto-renew option means I don't have to stress about renewals. Oh, and as a bonus, I hear their executives aren’t into big game hunting, which is a nice touch!
Just to add to what others said, I totally understand the frustration with last-minute notifications. You definitely want to ensure you choose a provider that keeps you in the loop about renewals. Namesilo and Openprovider both seem like solid bets.
