Hey everyone! I'm someone who games on and off, typically upgrading my setup every five years or so. It's been about five years since my last upgrade, and I'm considering my options now. Here's my current build:
- An old Antec 900 case (definitely pre-USB 2.0!)
- Intel i5 10600k CPU at 4.1GHz
- Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler (black)
- MSI MPG Z490 Gaming Edge WiFi motherboard
- 16GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM (2 x 8GB)
- M.2 SSD storage
- EVGA 750W PSU (Supernova Gold)
- Pixio PX275h monitor
I mostly enjoy playing open-world FPS games, and I usually wait for titles to drop to around $5 before picking them up. I just completed the Tomb Raider trilogy and am currently replaying Far Cry New Dawn. I'm looking to possibly upgrade to a 5060 Ti with 16GB and maybe bump my RAM to 32GB. I'm a bit concerned about whether my current setup will bottleneck any new components, especially since my motherboard only supports DDR4 and PCIe 3.0 x16. Given the current situation with prices and availability, I'd love your insights on compatibility and whether this upgrade makes sense. Thanks in advance!

Your 16GB of DDR4 RAM should be fine for now, but consider upgrading your CPU and motherboard to really get the most out of a new GPU. If you want to stick with Intel, aim for a motherboard with an LGA 1700 socket and consider a newer generation i5 (12th to 14th gen). Going with AMD could also be a smart choice, especially the Ryzen 5600 or 5700, but again, you'd need a new motherboard.
As for your GPU choice, the 5060 Ti is solid, but check out the 9060 XT; it might be available for around $80 less and could give you better performance for the price!

I’d prefer to avoid a full motherboard and CPU upgrade if possible. What if I just get the new GPU? Can I still overclock my current CPU to help it keep up? I heard some tools like bottleneck calculators can be misleading, but mine suggested that my CPU would handle 1440 gaming fine, as opposed to 1080. Any thoughts?
