Hey everyone, I'm trying to find out if there are any UPS models out there that come with a network interface card (NIC) capable of taking SFPs. I've had discussions with other engineers and admins about the potential downsides of connecting an IDF UPS to the same network it powers. It raises some questions during outages: how do we know if we lost power, if the switches failed, or if the UPS is down? I've thought about using spare fiber pairs and media converters in the past, but that can get really pricey. I'm curious about how you've tackled this issue.

We put network cards into our UPS units, which gives us alerts for battery issues or when it's running solely on battery power. If the switch fails and we don’t get alerts, someone has to investigate in a hurry. I mean, we had some crazy situations in the past, like flooding and even a fire! So I'm not sure if the extra expense for fiber management really pays off in the end.
It's probably a bit overboard, but having an expensive management module doesn’t seem like a priority for most UPS manufacturers right now. I think a media converter is the best way to go, even if it adds to the costs. Just gotta weigh the importance of monitoring against expense!
