My Hard Drive Space Keeps Disappearing—What Could Be Causing It?

I've been experiencing a strange issue with my hard drive. Earlier today, I attempted to download a large file that required 30GB of space. Initially, my PC indicated that I only had 18GB available, so I deleted some files to clear up about 30GB of space. After starting the download and stepping away for about 30 minutes, I returned to find that the download failed due to insufficient storage once again. To my confusion, the available storage had dropped back down to 18GB, even though I hadn't run any downloads or uploads during that time.

Out of concern, I ran a virus scan with McAfee but found no issues. I deleted a few more files while the scan was running, which brought my available space up to around 19GB, but when I checked again a few hours later, it had plummeted to 17.7GB. I can't understand how I'm losing storage like this. I've been manually sifting through files, but I can't find anything unusual. It seems like there's something going wrong with my PC, and I'm starting to feel worried. Has anyone else experienced something similar, or does anyone have an idea of what might be happening?

Honestly, a lot of people consider McAfee to be bloatware, and it can sometimes act more like a virus than a protector. You might be better off relying on Windows Defender for basic protection and getting rid of McAfee altogether.

I get what you mean; I didn't install it myself, it just came with my PC. I do mod for Nintendo, so I often visit sites that might not be the safest. I guess it's worth it for the extra scanning though, until my subscription ends.

You might want to try using TreeSize to visualize your storage usage; it can help you identify what's taking up space. It’s pretty useful for figuring out where your storage is going without all the hassle.

Don’t forget, the free version is usually all you need!

Have you tried WinDirStat to track down those disappearing gigabytes? It can really help you see what's happening with your storage.

You might also want to check for things like 'shadow storage,' especially in older systems. Sometimes, the system takes up extra space for restore points or system files. Just a thought!

If you frequently download large files, you might just need more storage space in general! A 4TB external hard drive could be a good solution, especially for your downloads.

Yeah, I have a 4TB external drive! I just wasn't sure how to download the files directly to it yet.
