My New PC Keeps Randomly Shutting Down—What Should I Check?

I recently bought a custom-built PC and have been experiencing random shutdowns and reboots since day one, even during light activities like browsing. The specs include an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X CPU, an ASUS Prime B550-PLUS motherboard, Corsair Vengeance RAM, an MSI/NVIDIA RTX 5070 GPU, a Kingston SSD, and a 1000W PSU. After returning it for repairs, they reinstalled Windows and replaced the SSD, yet the issues persist. After a couple of months, I noticed stability problems and several kernel errors. Despite running stress tests and monitoring temps, my PC still randomly shuts down, even while idle, with no error messages. What could be causing these issues, and what should I do next?

Yeah, that sudden power loss you’re experiencing usually points to the PSU. Even though it looks fine on paper, a PSU can still cause weird issues. I would go for a different brand and model this time, as compatibility can sometimes cause problems too. And checking the event viewer might help pinpoint the problem. You can find it by just typing "Event Viewer" in the Windows search bar.

To check the Event Viewer, press Windows + R, type in 'eventvwr', and hit enter. Look under 'Windows Logs' then 'System'. You can filter for Critical and Error events that might indicate what’s causing your shutdowns. Also, you might want to make sure your PSU has enough wattage for all your components. Sometimes, it's not just about the specs but how they're working together.

It sounds like you might be dealing with a faulty PSU. Those sudden shutdowns can often indicate power supply issues. It's good that you're monitoring temps and checking voltages, but they can still show normal readings even if the PSU isn't functioning correctly. I'd recommend replacing the PSU as a first step—it’s often the culprit in these scenarios. Just be sure to get one from a retailer with an easy return policy in case it doesn’t solve the problem.
