My New PC Keeps Shutting Down After a Minute in Windows – Help!

Hey everyone! I just built a new PC and here are the specs: Ryzen 7 3700X CPU, a brand new Asus A520M motherboard, 16GB of 3466MHz RAM (I've tried two different sets), a Gigabyte RX 5700 XT GPU (which has worked fine in my other PC), a Wraith Prism cooler, a brand new 1TB NVMe SSD, and an 8-year-old Supernova 750W PSU (I also tested with a 3-year-old PSU from my personal PC, but the issue is still there). It's all packed in an Atos Mini case.

The issue I'm facing is that while the PC boots up fine and the BIOS is stable, I encounter random shut downs or restarts shortly after booting into Windows—usually within a minute of just idling. I've tested with different RAM, disconnected all peripherals except the essentials, and reseated the GPU. I've even tried two different PSUs, but the problem persists. In safe mode, everything runs without crashing.

Factory resets of Windows are a pain; they take forever and often get stuck at 61%. Occasionally, I can do a clean install from USB, but it crashes later on.

Also, I noticed the GPU backplate gets really hot (like 60-70°C) within that minute in Windows. I'm wondering if this points to a faulty motherboard or SSD or if anyone has other suggestions. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

That overheating GPU backplate is a red flag. You might have a cooling issue or the GPU could be failing. It might help to check your thermal paste application and ensure the cooler is seated properly. Also, make sure the case has good airflow!

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. I’ll take a closer look at the thermal paste and airflow. Appreciate the advice!

Sounds like a frustrating situation! Given that your PC runs fine in safe mode, it might be a driver issue when booting normally. Have you tried updating the GPU drivers or using integrated graphics to see if it stabilizes? Just a thought!

Thanks for the suggestion! I haven’t tried integrated graphics yet. I’ll give that a shot and see if it makes any difference.
