Hey everyone! I recently got a Dell laptop for my new job as a primary school teacher in the UK, and I need to use it to plan over the summer. I've managed to connect it to my home WiFi, but nothing loads when I try to open websites on Edge or Chrome. I ran a troubleshooting check on Chrome, and it said, "Problems found. Resource (web proxy) is online but isn't responding to connection attempts." Then, there's a note saying the remote computer isn't responding, possibly due to firewall settings or because it's temporarily unavailable. I couldn't find any issues with the firewall on my laptop itself. I'm wondering if this is something I can fix at home or if I need to wait for my IT team at school to help out. I wasn't sure if the laptop is restricted from accessing networks outside of school due to security or GDPR policies, but I was assured I could use it from home. I'm not tech-savvy at all, so please explain like I'm 5! Oh, and just so you know, I figured it out – I just needed to turn off the proxy server. Phew!

You should definitely reach out to your IT department. They can help sort this kind of issue out since it sounds like a security setting related to your work. They might have restrictions on the laptop for safety reasons, especially if you’re not officially an employee yet. They usually have protocols to follow before giving access to personal networks, so it’s best to check with them first!
Totally agree with reaching out to IT! If you’re not officially working yet, there’s a chance they’ve put some protective measures on the laptop. Sometimes, they prevent access to certain networks to keep things secure. It might feel frustrating, but they can set it up for you, so hang tight!
Thank you for the advice! I’m really hoping I can sort it out before September, but I’m just not sure if IT will be around over the summer. Fingers crossed!
