I'm currently in my first IT internship as a student IT support role after a long journey of applying and training. While I'm thankful for the opportunity, I'm struggling to learn much due to a lack of structure and guidance. There are only a few people on my team managing various tasks like incident tickets, but they are always busy, and there's no onboarding support for me. I've mostly been doing simple tasks like imaging laptops, and I feel like I'm just not gaining the experience I was hoping for. I've noticed that my coworkers seem dismissive, and at times, they ignore my messages. I've come across other students who are getting structured training at their internships, which adds to my frustration. Given that I've completed about half of my 4-month internship, is it typical for internships in IT to be this disorganized? Should I hold on and keep figuring things out independently, or is it reasonable to expect some initial training? Also, with the potential for an extension, I'm unsure whether it's worth staying if I'm not really learning anything significant.

If you're feeling stuck, consider directly approaching your team members and expressing your desire to learn. Just say, "Can I shadow you for a bit? I'm keen to understand how you troubleshoot tasks." If you ask clearly and politely, most people will be willing to help. And don't wait to be assigned tasks; grab a ticket and work through it yourself. If you have questions, that's when you ask for assistance.
You're not alone. I had an internship once where I felt like I was just another number on a contract too. Take it as a chance to learn independently. Use your downtime for self-educating—read about the tools you're using, or even build something on your own. If your coworkers are not responsive, find other ways to learn—check old tickets for solutions or ask other departments how you can assist. This can give you insights into the real work environment despite the disorganization.
That's a great idea! I haven’t thought about learning from old tickets. Might be a good way to see what kinds of issues come up regularly.
To add onto what others have said, remember to keep your end goals in mind. Are you looking to gain experience to leap into another position or to build a skill set? If staying at this internship doesn't feel beneficial beyond a certain point, weigh your options. Building skills and gaining experience should be the priority, and if they’re not being met here, maybe it’s time to look elsewhere at the end of your term.
That makes sense. I think my long-term goal is to get into cybersecurity or something similar, so I’ll definitely need to focus on opportunities that align with that.
It sounds like you're in a tough spot, but unfortunately, this is not unusual for internships. Many companies don't have structured training programs, especially for student roles. I remember being in a similar situation where I felt more like a placeholder than a learner. Sometimes, it helps to really take the initiative. Try looking for easy tasks you can take on and don’t hesitate to ask questions. If you show enthusiasm, someone might step up to help you more.

I appreciate the advice! I might just start picking up random tickets to get my feet wet and see what happens.
