Need Advice on Accessing My Late Dad’s Devices

Hi everyone! I recently experienced a profound loss; my dad passed away unexpectedly, and he left me his MacBook and iPhone, but without the necessary passwords to access them. I received his laptop in May, and he passed in June, so we never had a chance to sort out any of the login details together. I'm really hoping to access his 2024 MacBook and iPhone to retrieve precious photos, and eventually, to use the devices myself. However, he didn't name me as a legacy contact, and I've checked the Apple legacy contact page thoroughly. I'm at a loss and would really appreciate any guidance or tips on how to gain access to these devices. Thanks for any help!

Unfortunately, accessing the devices without the passwords can be quite a challenge. Apple's support won't help with getting into the devices directly if you don't have the passcode for the iPhone. However, they might assist you in recovering the Apple ID account associated with the devices. Once you regain access to the account, you can then access iCloud and reset the Mac password. Just be aware that if the iPhone is locked with a passcode, without that passcode, you might need to erase it and set it up again. It's definitely a tough situation, and I’m really sorry to hear about your loss.

This situation can be really tricky, especially without a Legacy Contact. In many cases, you may need a court order to confirm your right to access your father's devices. If you're in the US, the order should specify your dad's name and Apple ID, along with your connection to him. I’m not sure how it works in Canada, but they might require something similar to probate documents. Getting legal advice could be the best path forward to understand what you’ll need.

Thanks for the heads-up! I think I'd need to go through probate, but I do have the original purchase receipt, which might help!

Yeah, having the original receipt could be very helpful! Just make sure to also bring your dad's death certificate if you can.

I’m really sorry for your loss. As a former Apple employee, I would recommend being cautious while trying to access the devices; repeated failed attempts can lead to them getting locked. If the cell number is still active, try resetting the Apple ID password through that. Also, look through any of your dad's notes to see if he wrote down passwords anywhere. Visiting a local Apple Store with the death certificate could also give you some personalized help. They might be able to guide you better after confirming your identity and relationship.

Thank you so much for that advice! I was really concerned about locking the devices. I can definitely bring the death certificate when I visit the Apple Store.

Also, if you manage to access the Apple ID, check for backup files on iCloud. You might be able to restore data from the iPhone without needing to access it directly.
