I just finished building my PC featuring a Ryzen 7 9700X, and while it's running pretty well, I'm really concerned about the temperatures I'm seeing. I used a KryoSheet from Thermal Grizzly as they recommended, but during installation, I noticed it had an oily substance to help it stick, and I suspect I might've used too much. My cooler is a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 EVO. Due to space limitations in my case, I mounted the fans in the middle and at the back instead of over the RAM. Right now, my CPU temperature is around 54°C while idle, but it spikes close to 90°C when gaming, and I'm worried this might damage my CPU. Any insights?

You should try using the thermal paste that came with your cooler instead of the KryoSheet. It’s generally designed to work best with your cooler. Also, make sure the fans are set up properly—fan placement can impact cooling efficiency, though it may not be the main issue here.
If your fans are in the middle and rear instead of directly over the RAM, that can affect airflow. Ensure your case has good ventilation, and maybe consider repositioning the fans if you can. Also, double-check that the KryoSheet was applied evenly and not excessively; too thick of a layer can lead to poor thermal conductivity.
