Hey everyone, I'm looking for some advice on my plan to upgrade my multimedia SSD. Currently, I have two NVME drives in my PC: a 2TB drive for my operating system and games, and a 500GB drive for multimedia storage that is filling up fast. The issue is, my motherboard doesn't have enough NVME slots for a third drive.
Here's my plan:
1. I'll use Clonezilla or Macrium to create an image of my 500GB multimedia drive and temporarily store it on my OS drive.
2. Then I'll shut down my PC, swap out the 500GB drive for a new, larger one.
3. After that, I'll restore the image back onto the new drive using Clonezilla or Macrium.
4. Finally, I'll expand the partition to utilize the full space of the new drive.
I'm wondering if this is the best approach, or if I should just copy the files normally instead of cloning to save on transfers.
Also, would it be smarter to get a cheap USB NVMe enclosure to clone directly between the drives? Any insights would be appreciated!

I would go with a USB to NVME adapter too; it's an efficient way to manage data. Cloning can work too, as long as you have enough space for the image on your OS drive.
Using an NVMe enclosure is great! I use one for games and a regular external SSD for movies and music. It works perfectly!
If you haven't bought a new drive yet, consider a 2.5" SATA drive for your media. It's more than fast enough for that purpose, and it’s usually cheaper!
Good point! I’ll look into that option as well. Thanks!
You have a few options: follow your plan exactly, move files directly to the other drive, or use a USB drive to transfer files first before installing the new one. Any of those should work fine!
I recommend getting a USB NVMe adapter. It's super convenient for transferring data between drives without hassle.

That sounds like a solid setup! How do you find the speed when playing games from the enclosure?
