Need Help Choosing Between the 9900X3D, 9800X3D, and 9950X for PC Upgrade

Hey everyone, I'm thinking about upgrading my CPU but I can't decide between a few options. Here's my current setup:
* **Motherboard**: x670 MSI Tomahawk
* **Current CPU**: Ryzen 7 7700
* **GPU**: 4070 Ti S
* **RAM**: 64GB 6000MHz CL30 DDR5
* **Power Supply**: 750W

I mainly use my PC for gaming (both native and VR) and work, particularly game development with Unity and Unreal Engine. I've noticed I have a CPU bottleneck in some VR games, and I see this as a chance to boost my performance. Here are the three CPUs I'm considering for my budget:

1. **9800X3D**: Great for gaming at about $510, but I'm concerned it might not perform as well for work tasks since it has the same 8-core/16-thread setup.
2. **9900X3D**: Priced around $600, it's not as strong for gaming but better for work. I'm unsure how much Unity really benefits from extra cores, and I'm worried there might be issues with stuttering in VR due to the lower core count.
3. **9950X**: This one costs $550 and seems ideal for work, but it's the least appealing for me since my main focus is gaming. Plus, I'll need a better cooler, which would add another $50-$100.

I would really appreciate advice, especially from those who have experience with these CPUs in Unity or VR gaming, but I'm open to any suggestions!

Honestly, I think the 9900X3D is your best bet. It offers a significant core count increase for a relatively small price jump compared to the 9800X3D, and the performance loss in gaming isn't that big—just around 3-4%. For your work tasks, those extra cores will really come in handy!

Have you considered the 9950X3D? If you sell your current 7700, that could help offset the cost a bit. Investing in a CPU that will enhance your work performance might be worth it in the long run, even if it's a bit pricier. Just make sure to budget for that cooler upgrade! If you don't manage to sell your old CPU, the 9950X paired with a decent cooler might still be a solid choice. Don't underestimate the 9800X3D either; it's quite efficient for multi-threaded tasks and performs better than the 7700. Just keep your main focus on your work needs first.

That's a good point, I hadn't thought about selling the old CPU. Might help with the costs!
