Need Tips for Migrating a Small Business from Windows to Linux

Hi everyone,

We're a small business with fewer than 50 employees, and we're facing some upcoming contract requirements that will force us to move away from all Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Salesforce, and other infrastructure that falls under U.S. jurisdiction. While I think we have some workable plans for our network security, CRM, CAD/CAM, ERP, and other systems, I'm particularly stressed about how to replace Windows on the user level.

Has anyone successfully migrated their small organization away from Windows at the user level? How was the reaction from the staff—did they resist the change, or were they understanding? I'm sure we aren't the only ones dealing with this issue, so I'd greatly appreciate any practical insights you might have.

Thanks a lot!

Your question is pretty broad, so it’s tough to give specific advice without more details on the contract requirements. It’s essential to clarify if the constraints are from regulation or client demands. Also, will you be operating in one country or multiple? The migration can definitely be done, but understanding all the security and regulatory requirements is key to planning it effectively.

Yeah, the specifics are a little murky right now. The main guideline is to ensure critical systems aren’t governed by foreign jurisdiction, which is part of upcoming EU contract requirements. While we have some air-gapped systems for security now, this will likely require everything to be hosted on-premises. I’m not too worried about the infrastructure, but the user terminals and the potential pushback are my main concerns.

From my experience, if your team primarily uses web-based applications, the transition might not be as painful as you'd expect. The fewer critical tasks done directly on desktop apps, the easier it'll be. However, remember that problems can arise when your staff needs to share data or collaborate with external partners using different systems. You might want to prepare for requests for Macbooks if the Windows transition doesn’t go smoothly.
