Our Domain is Down! How Can We Recover?

Hey everyone, I'm in a real bind here—our entire domain is inaccessible! A colleague tried to remove a child domain from our forest setup, which consists of a root domain called 'croot.local' along with four subdomains: 'childone.croot.local', 'childtwo.croot.local', 'childthree.croot.local', and 'childfour.croot.local'. My colleague moved all users and groups from 'childfour.croot.local' to 'childthree.croot.local' and then attempted to remove 'childfour'. Unfortunately, now all our clients and servers are returning a message that says 'The username or password is incorrect.' I'm at a loss for what to do next. Does anyone have any advice on how we can regain access to our system?

Yeah, I have to say this seems like an RGE situation. Have you checked your ChatGPT history? I'm concerned that the root domain may have been deleted. If so, getting into Domain Services Restore Mode could be essential, but you really need to know what you're dealing with before trying to fix it on your own.

Yikes! It’s risky to depend on AI for critical tasks in your system admin work. If you can figure out what commands were run, that could help, but right now your priority is to check for backups and consider restoring from the latest known working state.

In situations like this, if you're not causing additional problems by making changes, I'd suggest just leaving things as they are for now. Just focus on understanding what commands were run and hope you have good backups to work from.

First off, take a deep breath and stop any further attempts to fix this on your own. It sounds like a mess that could use some professional help. Write down exactly what commands were used when your colleague tried to remove the child domain, and consider hiring an expert to guide you through recovery. This isn't a simple fix and having someone with experience is essential.

Absolutely agree. You need to get someone experienced in here, especially if time is crucial. If your company has a go-to IT expert or service, reach out! If you have backups, restoring from one of them might be your best option.
