I just got into computers and I'm feeling a bit lost here. I ordered an i7 14700K from Amazon, but when I opened the box today, I found an i9 14900K instead. The box seemed damaged and looked like it had been opened before. Even though the factory seal was still on the CPU, it appeared somewhat used. I thought the box might have been damaged during shipping, but I noticed that an important component was missing when I checked out some unboxing videos. All I got was the CPU in cardboard and a little Intel booklet. Is it possible I received a returned CPU by mistake? What should I do next?

There's a chance that the CPU you received is either defective or secondhand. It’s not uncommon for returns to be swapped inappropriately; the original buyer could have returned a broken i9 in the wrong box. I recommend reaching out to Amazon for a refund. Don't try using it just yet—you want to be sure you're not unintentionally stuck with someone else's problem, you know?
It sounds like you should definitely return it. Even though it seems like you might've gotten a better deal with the i9, you really don't want a potentially defective CPU. It's best to return it rather than risk having issues later on, especially since you don’t know the background of the product you received.

Thanks for your advice! I did check the warranty online and it seems that the box is genuine and still covered until 2030. Do you think I should test it out to see if it works?
