I recently graduated and have a 9-5 job with plenty of free time afterward. I have lots of hobby projects I'm excited about, covering various fields, from fun ideas to ones that could boost my career. However, I struggle to find the energy and focus to work on them after work. Sometimes I get stuck on minor details or feel frustrated and distracted. I know many programmers have side projects, so I'm curious about how you all keep the motivation alive for non-paid work. How do you make it more enjoyable or less frustrating?

I get my motivation from the dream of creating something successful, like an app that could change my life. I keep that vision in mind, and it gives me energy to push through. But yeah, some days are harder than others, and motivation can really dip!
I’ve noticed that I get the most work done on weekends or when I’m out and about, like on the train with my laptop. After work, it’s tough for me to focus on anything that requires brainpower. Low-key tasks, like testing or debugging, work better for me while I unwind with some TV.
That sounds like a good strategy! I also find weekends to be more productive for my personal projects.
Some days, if I feel productive at work, I can carry that momentum into my evening projects. It’s like a snowball effect! But if work is slow or draining, I just can’t get into my hobbies afterward. I think it also helps to set realistic goals for personal projects instead of aiming for something huge right away.
That makes sense. Setting smaller, manageable goals definitely takes the pressure off.
For me, it’s about building a solid portfolio rather than just working non-stop after my day job. The work we do outside work is just as crucial for our career. You’ve got to balance your energy and interests. I find that having fun hobbies can make me feel more rounded and inspired when I do sit down to code.
Absolutely! A good portfolio can open many doors, but it’s all about finding the right balance.
Honestly, I feel you! After a long day at my full-time job, I just don’t have the mental energy to dive into more code. I’ve found that picking hobbies that are completely different from programming, like music or spending time outside, really helps. It acts as a nice counterbalance. Sometimes, when I’ve had a long day at work, I just want to chill rather than sit at my desk again!
Same! I try to switch gears completely after work. It's nice to recharge.
Right? It’s important to separate work from personal time to keep it enjoyable.

I feel that! The dream keeps you going, but it’s not easy to stay pumped every day.
