Recommendations for Large Scale Data Backup Solutions

I'm looking for some advice on software or solutions for backing up a massive amount of data, around 300 to 400 TB. Currently, we use Veeam for our critical shares and VMs, which is costly—about $300k a year for roughly 200 TB of data and 40 VMs. However, we have a significant backup gap because I can't use Veeam for the larger project and archive data without incurring exorbitant front-end licensing costs of around $400k annually just for backup. We've explored other options, like getting a second PowerScale, but that's a hefty investment at about $3.3 million. I tried backing up to tape, but that didn't work out after wasting 30 tapes and over a month's effort. I'm open to using S3 Glacier for backup, but I need a solution that won't charge me an arm and a leg for licensing. I'd also considered using a virtual tape library in S3 Glacier but still want to avoid the high software costs. Any suggestions on feasible solutions or alternatives?

Don’t overlook the option of using a four-shelf Ceph cluster. It's pretty flexible and supports different formats like S3, NFS, etc. I know you're concerned about that licensing issue with Veeam, but this might give you a more sustainable setup without stacking on those extra costs.

Have you thought about using Backblaze B2 for your backup? Since you're mostly dealing with archives, the cost is quite reasonable—around $28,800 a year for 400 TB. It might be a good fit since you wouldn't need to access the data frequently and it avoids those steep licensing fees.

Have you considered using rclone to move your data to S3 Glacier? It can help manage the transfer efficiently without the high costs of enterprise licensing. Just keep an eye on the bandwidth limits while transferring.
